Lifeguards

A Gulf Beach Lifeguard participates in beach rescue operations on the Gulf and McGee Beaches and responds to any medical emergency through dispatch calls, from drowning to trauma with injuries. This position aims to keep beach visitors safe while on the beach and swimming in the gulf waters.
 

UPCOMING SWIM TRYOUT INFORMATION

  • Tryouts will be held at the Corpus Christi ISD Natatorium: 3202 Cabaniss Pkwy, Corpus Christi, TX 78415
  • Requirements to advance to Corpus Christi’s Beach Rescue Rookie School are: Swim 500 meters in 10 minutes or less, complete the job application, and pass a background/drug screen and physical.

LIFEGUARD ACADEMY

Before the summer peak season starts, the Corpus Christi Beach Rescue staff trains a group of lifeguard candidates, or “rookies,” during the Lifeguard Academy. The academy uses the curriculum of the United States Lifesaving Association Open Water. Lifesaving skills are learned in the classroom environment and the open water of the Gulf of Mexico.

The course consists of 40 hours of training, including the American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification, United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguard Training, public social interaction training, and physical training.

Lifeguard candidates will be paid for training, are expected to bring their swimsuits, and will be given a rookie shirt to wear during the academy. Upon successfully completing the Lifeguard Academy, candidates will be issued their Lifeguard uniform and be eligible to work for the City of Corpus Christi Beach Rescue Team.
 

SWIM PRACTICE

Interested applicants are encouraged to utilize the Corpus Christi ISD Natatorium on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to practice their swimming skills from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. before attending a tryout session, although it is not required.
