Think Waste Reduction!
Recycling is an important component of the City of Corpus Christi's waste reduction efforts. It makes economic and environmental sense to recycle what is consumed...but it makes even more sense to consume less! Here are tips on how you can reduce the amount of goods, products and packaging you use at home and work.

Waste Reduction Tips

- Avoid items with excess packaging.

- Buy in bulk when you can.

- Buy beverages in refillable bottles.

- Re-use or carry your own grocery bags to the market

- Refuse a grocery sack when you can hand carry items.

- Buy goods packaged in recycled and recyclable materials.

- Buy re-usable products, like sponges instead of paper towels

- Use coffee mugs instead of styrofoam disposable cups.

Buy Recycled
Buying recycled products helps turn waste reduction strategies into economic development opportunities. The packaging on many products lists whether recycled material is used. Buying these products helps "close the loop." Because these products use fewer resources, you will be helping the environment. Shop responsibly and help Corpus Christi do its part to help avert a waste crisis in Texas.  For additional information, please call the City's Customer Service Center at (361) 826-2489.

What happens to items collected?
Dolphin Recycling Inc. sorts the recyclables by container type into individual piles of plastic, aluminum and tin. Newspaper and paper items are sorted separately. After sorting the materials, Dolphin Recycling compresses the sorted piles into compacted bales for shipping. The materials are then sold to mills and fabricators for re-use in their manufacturing processes. Recycled plastic containers are re-used to make plastic containers, filling for sleeping bags and winter jackets, backpacks, plastic lumber (such as that used on white benches on the City's seawall) and fiber for carpets. Recycled newspaper, catalogs, home office paper, and unwanted mail is "de-inked" and made into new rolls of newsprint and new paper products. Recycled steel and aluminum is used to make new metal products.
