FREE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
The City of Corpus Christi Water Department sponsors a variety of free educational programs that help teachers meet TEKS requirements. Teachers are encouraged to take advantage of these quality programs.
"Major Rivers" was introduced to area schools in 1989 to help fourth grade students learn about Texas' major water resources, how water is treated and delivered to their homes and schools, and how to care for their water resources and use them wisely. Teachers are 100% satisfied. View the Teacher's Guide Book and Program Objectives for each lesson.
"Learning to be Water Wise and Energy Efficient" - This award-winning unit was introduced to Corpus Christi schools in 1998. Teacher guidebooks, along with student handbooks make it easy to use. Each student receives their own water saving kit which includes a 2.5 gpm showerhead, a kitchen and bathroom aerator, leak detection tablet, flow measuring back, plus more. Learning to be Water Wise and Energy Efficient was developed by the National Energy Foundation.
Toby Globy's "It's Up to Me and to You" features our mascot, Toby Globy! The program kit features environmental songs written in English and Spanish. Students in PreKinder to 2nd grade will learn to conserve water and recycle. To invite Toby Globy to your school, call 826-1879.
Teachers can preview the guidebook created especially for this program.
"The Story of Drinking Water" - This unit comes with a teacher's guide book and colorful student activity booklet that illustrates the water cycle, water treatment, water distribution and water conservation tips. It is perfect for students in grades 3 through 5. The program was developed by the American Water Works Association.

Prescott Elementary Installs Rainwater Harvesting System
Creating Savers Today, Saving a Drop for Tomorrow!
Prescott Elementary in Corpus Christi is growing future gardeners, and learning an
economic way to conserve water in the gardens. Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Special Ed classes under the guidance of Ms. Diana Chavez, along with a group of Nueces Master Gardeners led by Janet Tysinger and rainwater harvesting specialist Gail Cargile, have re-established a butterfly garden on their campus.
The students are learning how to gather rainwater in a storage barrel and later to use it to water their gardens. Prescott is the first CCISD campus with a rainwater harvesting station.
The butterfly garden was put in place in 2004 as a memorial for former student Rey Andrew Rendon, who died in 2003. The students cleaned up the garden and added the rainwater harvesting station. Along with Principal Jaime Gonzales, the students dedicated the garden with a ribbon cutting. Each child was given a gummy worm to eat as Mr. Gonzales cut the ribbon.
