CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The City of Corpus Christi will be changing back to chloramine disinfectant on Monday, May 1, 2017, after an alternative disinfectant was used in the water distribution system. This change is intended to benefit our customers by reducing the levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the system, while still providing protection from waterborne disease. Chlorine dioxide was successfully added on April 17, 2017 as part of the permanent disinfection treatment.
It will take 5 to 7 days for the entire water system to change back to chloramines and most residents will notice the smell or taste of chlorine diminish over time. The City urges the following groups to take necessary precautions as the change occurs:
Dialysis patients should confirm with their dialysis provider to ensure that chloraminated water is not being used for any dialysis procedure.
Fish tank owners should make sure chemicals and filters in their tanks are effective in water that has been treated with chloramines. Consult your pet supply provider to determine a course of action.
Medical facilities should determine if additional precautions are required for medical equipment and operations.
City staff continues to closely monitor the situation with water samples taken throughout the City as part of the overall water quality program. The City of Corpus Christi adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year's tax rate. The tax rate will effectively be raised by 4.69 percent and will raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $16.87.
