Changing Your Water Ways

  • Turn off all water in the house, then check the flow indicator on your water meter. If it's moving, you could have a water leak.

  • Use the Residential Water Saver Kit to reduce flow from showers, reduce flow from faucets, use less water per flush, and detect toilet tank leaks. It's available free by calling the Water Hotline at (361) 826-1600.

  • Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.

  • Take shorter showers or take a bath in a partially filled tub.

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.

  • Use your automatic dishwasher only for full loads.

  • If you wash dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing.

  • Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables.

  • Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator.

  • Water your lawn only when it needs it.

  • Water during the cooler time of the day.

  • Don't water the gutter or sidewalk.

  • Landscape your yard using the Xeriscape principles.

  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.

  • Don't run the hose while washing your car.

  • Check for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets, and couplings.
