Greenwood Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Greenwood Wastewater Treatment Plant is located at the intersection of Saratoga Boulevard and Greenwood Drive. The original construction of the plant commenced in 1957 and was completed in 1959. the latest improvements were completed in 2000. At that time, the plant's capacity was increased to treat 6.0 MGD. This plant serves the International Airport and about 6,000 acres of the City's westside.
Greenwood plant was recently issued a more stringent permit with 10 milligrams per liter (mg/l) CBOD5, 15 mg/l TSS and 3 mg/l NH3-N discharge. The plant has been treating about 5.0 MGD, on the average. the effluent quality for the last ten months averaged less than 5 mg/l CBOD5, 5mg/l TSS and 1.0 mg/l NH3-N. the plant has been awarded American of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies' (AMSA) Gold Award four times and Silver Award three times in the last seven years.
Staffing at this plant consist of ten employees: six operators, two laborers, a plant supervisor and an assistant. The plant supervisor has a Class A Wastewater Operator's Certificate. Three of the operators have Class B and three have Class C Certificates. These operators work eight hour shifts, seven days a week. This facility operates under an authorized permit issued by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The plant is a conventional activated sludge process with anaerobic digestion. The processed sludge is dewatered using sand drying beds. About 2.5 dry tons of sludge is processed per day. The sludge is disposed at the City owned landfill.
