The public engagement process was developed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The public process will closely align with the original outline below but we modified as necessary to allow for virtual public engagement as an alternative to public meetings.
- Create a Subcommittee to focus on designing, organizing, and implementing the public engagement and feedback process. Bob White and Chad Magill will co-chair. Include Communication Director Kim Womack.
- Create a Speakers Bureau from Committee Members for presentation requests and include informational talking points for a consistent presentation on charter revision proposals.
- Partner with the League of Women Voters and the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce to hold and televise a city-wide public hearing, including a presentation by the Committee.
- Hold evening public hearings for citizen education and feedback in each of the five council districts with presentations by members of the Committee.
- Hold background meetings with the Caller-Times Editorial Board and each of the local television stations.
- Provide key public information in both Spanish and English.
- Have the City of Corpus Christi’s Communication Department create a Charter Revision web page to provide public information and receive public feedback during the Charter revision process, which will include material such as:
◦ Copy of the City Charter
◦ Charter Revision Committee member roster
◦ Schedule of committee meetings and public hearings
◦ Committee objective and methodology
◦ Public engagement and feedback plan
◦ Tentative Agreements on each issue that receives a majority vote of the Committee and copies of Committee minority opinions.
- Have the City of Corpus Christi’s Communication Department work with the Committee to create a social media presence that drives public engagement in the Charter revision process, as well as a connection to the City Charter Revision web page.
- Create a robust youth engagement and feedback initiative to include outreach to both Del Mar Community College and Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, as well as explore an engagement component for secondary education students.
