Most homeowners, renters, and dwelling policies cover home flood damage in the home caused by a leaking roof. The policies do not cover personal property - unless hail or wind damage caused your roof or walls to leak. An approved private insurance company or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides coverage for damage from rising waters. YOU MUST OBTAIN THIS COVERAGE SEPARATELY from a standard homeowners or dwelling policy. Flood insurance pays for debris removal. It does not pay for temporary living expenses if you have to move from your home.

Homeowners and renters policies pay for property repairs, debris removal, and temporary additional living expenses. Make a list and TAKE PICTURES of your damaged property. Make only temporary repairs to prevent further damage until an insurance adjuster inspects the damage. Cover broken windows and holes to keep rain out. Find a reputable contractor to make repairs. Verify the contractor's references, have a written contract before repairs begin, and pay only as the contractor completes the repairs. For additional assistance contact the Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) may have opened a Disaster Recovery Center in your area, which can provide additional assistance.
