"Improving the quality of life in our community, one neighborhood at a time"

The Neighborhood Initiative Program (NIP) is designed to enhance the quality of life for Corpus Christi neighborhood residents through the concentrated delivery of services and programs provided by the City of Corpus Christi. Working in partnership with the neighborhoods, the City's goal is to raise awareness of code and zoning ordinances, provide information on accessing city services and promote clean and safe neighborhoods.

"Taking the initiative"

The City of Corpus Christi will take the "initiative", by making the first efforts to provide these concentrated operational services and encourage the residents to participate in the intensive "Clean Up" efforts. Ultimately, the City will provide the information and support to encourage, empower and enable the residents of the NIP neighborhoods to better maintain and continuously improve their neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Selection Criteria

The Neighborhood Initiative Program is scheduled in designated neighborhoods (approximately a 10-block radius) throughout the city that have been identified as having high crime, high code and zoning violations and a variety of needed improvements to and concerns with streets, trash/brush collection, street lighting, public health and animal control.

"Clean Up"

Each Neighborhood Initiative Program begins with a three to four week concentrated effort by the City of Corpus Christi providing enhanced and coordinated services in the following areas:

  • Street Repairs / Services
  • Heavy Debris / Trash / Brush Collections
  • Enhanced Police Patrol / Enforcement
  • Enhanced Animal Control Sweeps
  • Code Enforcement Evaluations of Residential Properties
  • Clearing and Mowing of Vacant Lots
  • Boarding Up of Vacant / Substandard Structures
  • Demolition of Vacant / Substandard Structures
  • Storm Water Inlet Cleaning
  • Street and Traffic Lighting Replacements and Enhancements
  • Street and Traffic Signage Replacement and Enhancements
  • Fire Prevention Evaluation of Neighborhood
  • Park & Recreation Enhancements
  • Environmental Evaluation of Neighborhood for Continued Improvement

These services are planned and scheduled as a result of the City's pre-assessment of needs for each designated neighborhood along with the concerns and suggestions provided by the residents at neighborhood meetings held prior to each scheduled NIP effort.

"Progress Report & Celebration"

At the conclusion of each of the concentrated three to four week "Clean Up" periods, a "Progress Report & Celebration" neighborhood meeting will be held to solicit feedback from the residents on how we, the City of Corpus Christi in partnership with the neighborhood residents, did to begin addressing the unique needs of each neighborhood. Post assessment evaluations will be provided by the City and discussions initiated on how the neighborhood will continue the improvement efforts.

A Sustainability Plan (Keeping the Neighborhood Clean & Safe)

Following the initial concentrated "Clean Up" phase of each NIP effort, a "Sustainability Plan" will be developed by the City of Corpus Christi and representatives from each designated neighborhood. The "Sustainability Plan" will provide coordinated on-going efforts to maintain the improvements that were made during the "Clean Up" phase of the NIP, and start new activities and efforts for continued improvements and beautification.

Possible Activities Will Include:

  • Neighbors on Watch Program
  • Litter Critter Truck - Clean Ups
  • Recycling Activities
  • Beautification Projects
  • Anti-Pollution Education
  • Housing Issues Education
  • Animal Control Education
  • Operation Clean Sweep (Demolition Projects)

The Sustainability Plan will be scheduled for one year with the leadership of the NIP and City representatives. Quarterly neighborhood meetings will be held to provide support with recognition and incentive activities. Following the one-year program, the neighborhood will be encouraged and empowered to manage continued efforts and activities for their neighborhood.
