Partial Cave-In of
-
Brawner parkway 12' x 11' Storm Water Outfall (Proctor Box) at Ocean Drive
A cave-in occurred at this location on Tuesday, May 6, 2003. Storm Water repair crews had been monitoring this location and subsequent inspection of a subsidence revealed a serious problem. The affected outfall was constructed in 1953 and had only routine maintenance. The resulting cave-in measured approximately 4' x4' at the surface and was located in the northbound lane of Ocean Drive. This line is a major storm water trunk main, which is installed at a depth that is subject to tidal flows.
Currently, all work has been completed on this main. A private utility contractor was utilized to correct the line deficiencies and restore the street. During this work, the integrity of this 50-year old structure was found to be in excellent condition, considering the age of the line.
